Mauricio “Shogun” Rua went into UFC Hamburg having won his last three fights, but that streak ended in Germany on Sunday night. Anthony Smith, fresh off a 53-second knockout over Rashad Evans in June, knocked out the Brazilian legend in 89 seconds at Barclaycard Arena with a barrage of punches that split open Rua’s forehead.
In the co-main event, Corey Anderson grinded out Glover Teixeira for three rounds. While Teixeira proved to be dangerous with slick combinations on the feet, Anderson’s volume and wrestling ability eventually overcame the former title contender.
The German fighters on the card ended up with mixed results. While Abu Azaitar and Nasrat Haqparast collected impressive victories, David Zawada, Nick Hein and Khalid Taha suffered close decision losses, respectively.
In a night filled with decisions, Manny Bermudez’ 59-second Triangle Choke finish of Davey Grant stood out, as well as Darko Stosics technical knockout against Jeremy Kimball after 3:13 of the first round.
